This week's Friday Five.
Wow, two Friday Fives in a row I wanna do. How exciting. And I'm actually doing it on friday, too.
1. What was the last book you read (or are currently reading)?
I am currently reading The Tainted Cup, by Robert Jackson Bennett, at
argentum_ls' recommendation, and I am thoroughly enjoying it. It's a murder mystery that turns out to be a much bigger conspiracy than expected, from the perspective of the lead investigator's assistant. It's set in a world in which extreme biological modification of humans, animals, and plants is commonplace, and can have many, many different effects. The main character himself has been modified to have a perfect memory, and to remember everything. The murder weapon used in most of the deaths he's investigating is a type of tree that has been altered to grow impossibly quickly, reaching full size within minutes. A problem, when one has inhaled the spores.
Oh, and the plot of Pacific Rim is happening in the background.
Truly a fascinating book. I'm greatly enjoying the setting, and the mystery, and the characters are a lot of fun. There's a sequel I'll be getting my hands on as soon as I can, and apparently a third installment coming out in August.
I also recently finished Wolf Worm, by T. Kingfisher. I've yet to encounter a Kingfisher novel I don't enjoy, but this one falls pretty close to the top of my list of faves, from her. It was pretty horrifying at points (intentional, this being a horror novel), and I loved the way the story came together, as well as some of the plot twists in the latter half especially. Colorful characters, colorful setting. . . never gonna look at opossums the same way again.
Kingfisher horror has a way of doing that. I'll just add that to the list along with school buses and rabbits.
2. What was the last movie you watched?
Project Hail Mary. Went to see it with my mom the day after it came out. She's a massive fan of the novel, and was wildly excited about the movie.
I enjoyed it quite a bit. I thought there were a couple of points where they could have readjusted their pacing somewhat, bits where they spent too much time on one thing and not quite enough on another (I thought the getting-to-know-you sequence with Rocky was pretty rushed), but I still quite enjoyed it. The visuals were great, and I enjoyed their designs for a lot of stuff, and for Rocky himself. I deeply appreciate that they used real sets and practical effects for as much as possible, including Rocky.
Minor pacing issues aside, it was incredibly solid. It was absolutely gorgeous visually, and had excellent cinematography. I'm a huge sucker for some good cinematography. Also had an excellent soundtrack, done by Daniel Pemberton. He's my fave contemporary film composer, so I'm always excited to see his name on stuff. Over all a thoroughly enjoyable movie.
3. What television series are you currently watching?
Most recently I finished a rewatch of Burn Notice. I love that show, and did a whole big write-up about it here.
For actual airing shows, I've been keeping up with High Potential. It's not what I'd call top-notch television, compared to some other stuff I've seen, but I do find it to be a lot of fun. I enjoy the characters a lot, and if the plotlines and paths to solving the mystery of the week are all a little contrived, I still usually enjoy the journey.
And I gotta say, I'm so glad that truly episodic, mystery-of-the-week style shows are making a comeback. Those were scarce on the ground for a few years, and I'm happy the format didn't die out completely.
4. What are some of your favorite blogs or communities online?
Gotta shout out the Highlander discord server, I've had a lot of fun hanging there since it was created. I'm also in a couple of artist servers that are mostly full of furry artists, and that's always a delightful, if weird, time.
Given how geographically far-flung some of us are, I also mostly communicate with my friends from college online. ❤️
5. What social media do you belong to and check often?
I mean, here. I don't consider ao3 social media, but I spend a lot of time there as well. Otherwise, it's mostly Tumblr, and I've been active there for years and years. I'm on Bluesky, as well, but I'm mostly just there for all the really spectacular artists, and I generally just lurk and look at glorious artwork.
