This week's Friday Five.
Now this is an interesting one. Some easy questions, and one or two I had to think about some.
1. What do you consider your current main fandom?
Still gotta be Highlander. It's a show I love, one I'm still writing pretty regularly for, and I'm relatively active in the community. It's one I have ideas and thoughts for fairly regularly, and continues to take up a reasonable (or unreasonable) amount of mental real estate.
It could also be said Guild Wars 2 is a reasonably active fandom for me. It doesn't hold my attention the same way HL does, and I'm not involved in any community outside the game itself, but it's a game I still play regularly enough and every once in a while I get inspired and knock out a new story for it. I've been playing for about 12 years and haven't lost interest, so it definitely has its place for me.
2. What was your first fandom?
Okay this is hard to answer, because I'm not really sure how to categorize 'first' fandom. I've been a fan of various things for most of my life, but I'm not really sure the best way to categorize being a part of a fandom vs just being a fan of something.
Honestly, it was probably Pokemon. I was about the target age when Pokemon first appeared in the US. I was into the show, and remember playing the original games on my neighbor's gameboy on the school bus. I collected the cards, though not very seriously, and went to card-trading meet-ups every now and again.
The first time I remember deliberately engaging with a broader fandom community was much later, in college, with the furry fandom (I find it a little odd to call it 'the furry fandom', since in my experience furries are some of the most focused I've encountered on building their own characters, worlds, and narratives, but whatever works). I got invited to a (sadly now defunct) furry convention with some friends, and ended up not only attending but working a booth in the artist's alley there. I took a bunch of pencil drawing commissions and had a great time. Made some friends I stayed in touch with for a number of years after, and I've kept my toes in the community ever since. I've still got a fair number of friends there, and I never get tired of seeing the art. There are some spectacular furry artists out there, and the community is still endlessly creative.
3. Do you have any favorite headcanons or fan theories?
Oh, plenty, all of which I have immediately forgotten now that I'm responding to this question.
I think one that I've most whole-heartedly adopted and have integrated into at least one story I've written, the theory that the Game in Highlander is less something mandated as a part of Immortality, and more a piece of culture that developed somewhere in ancient history, and became so widespread among Immortal populations as to be taken as gospel. I can't remember where I first encountered that theory in fic, though I know I've seen it at least mentioned a few places. It appeals to me much more than the Game being some fated end, and makes for a much more interesting piece of culture to explore, as far as I'm concerned.
Not really a theory, but I'm also fully on board with the common Highlander fandom trend of a) ignoring Archangel/Richie's death, b) Ignoring Endgame/Connor's death, and c) completely ignoring the fact that The Source exists.
4. Have you ever created fanworks?
Lol. Lmao, even.
My works count on ao3 currently sits at 101, since I started posting in 2022, and I fully intend to keep writing and posting there. I've also done a few pieces of fanart for various fandoms, in the past.
5. Are you still active in any old fandoms?
I mean, I mentioned above I'm still involved with the furry community, and I've stuck with Guild Wars 2 pretty solidly for 12 years.
And I still, to this day, love Pokemon.
