250k milestone stats!
25 April 2026 19:53It's so many words. I don't really know what we expected in terms of length when we started this series, we're both such pantsers that there's so little outright planning that goes into any of this, but we're both pretty excited to be at this point.
For a little bonus in honor of this occasion, here are some stats on the project!
— As mentioned, our current wordcount is 250,000 exactly.
— We currently have 13 total stories
— 7 are multi-chapter casefic, the shortest of which is just shy of 25k words, the longest of which is about 36k, though the current story (Fish or Cut Bait) is probably going to be at least 46k by the time it's finished.
— 6 are shorter side or intermission stories, ranging in length from about 2.5k to about 11.5k words
— There are currently 76 total chapters, counting single-chapter short stories as their own chapter
— We've been posting this series for 1 year, 3 months, and 1 week (writing started 10 months prior to first posting)
— At present, we have a total of 9 WIPs for this series between the two of us, including Fish or Cut Bait, the currently-posting story. 2 or 3 of these will likely never get posted as part of the main series, and were theoretical shorts that just haven't made it into the lineup for one reason or another
— We have had cameos from 8 canon Highlander characters (Thomas Powell, Duncan MacLeod, Joe Dawson, Ceirdwyn, Darius, Reverend Bell, Derek Worth, and Gregor Powers)
— We have 7 original characters that appear in more than one story (Francesca Talbot, Diana Chase, Sam Grant, Maggie Holden, Tomas Ibarra, and the very minor but still recurring Agents Dhawan and Gonzales)
— Matthew has suffered 9 'on-screen' deaths (and innumerable implied off-screen ones). The story with the most 'on-screen' deaths is Dead End, with 3.
— Thus far, there has been only one Immortal challenge and beheading.
And for some sillier stats:
— There have been 6 shitty hotels stayed in over the course of the series
— 4 depicted 'evening walks' (3 of which were actually excuses for conducting Immortal-related business)
— 12 cups of coffee have been consumed by various characters 'on-screen'. Surprised it's not more, really
By the time we're finished with this series, the plan is to have 10 full multi-chapter casefic stories, and however many corresponding shorts we end up writing to go along with them. I'm still a little flabbergasted at how huge this project got, but it's been such a fun experience so far, all 250k words of it!

Date: 26 Apr 2026 02:33 (UTC)(On an amusing related note, the shitty hotel featured in the third story, People Like Us, was originally based on a real hotel in Baton Rouge that I stayed at one time. It was bright orange. I thought my local friend was joking when she told me that, until I saw it. She was not joking. Alas, hotel description ended up being extraneous to the rest of the story, and didn't make the final cut.)
