Well it's been a couple of days (or a week, for yuletide), but both HLH Shortcuts and Yuletide have de-anonymized, so I can talk a bit about what all I wrote now.
I had an interesting time for my pieces for both these exchanges, both did a couple things that were a little outside my usual comfort zone, but I had a really good time.
For yuletide, I wrote:
Hours and Hands and Eyes (1954 words) by Teratornis
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: The Saint of Steel - T. Kingfisher
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Bishop Beartongue (The Saint of Steel)
Additional Tags: Clothing, Introspection
Summary: Bishop Beartongue contemplates the cost of necessary impressions.
I love a good bit of introspection, but I've usually got at least some interaction between characters in my stories, so doing something that was purely introspective was a pretty interesting experience. I've also never written Beartongue before, though I've wanted to for a while, and I wanted to be a little careful about approaching this, especially given the requester's desire for a focus on Beartongue specifically. She's the sort of personality I really enjoy writing, so I wasn't too worried, but this was still not my usual sort of piece.
I learned a good amount about ecclesiastical clothing, that's for sure, and I enjoyed really going into some detail about the outfit in the story. Beartongue's formal clothes are never really described, so I had a lot of freedom to go where I wanted with that, and sort of work through what would suit her best and how that would fit in with the setting and with her position. Maybe not quite my usual sort of story, but I'm quite happy with it.
For HLH Shortcuts I wrote:
In Good Company (5710 words) by Teratornis
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Highlander: The Series
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Connor MacLeod & Richie Ryan
Characters: Richie Ryan, Connor MacLeod
Additional Tags: Grief/Mourning, Family, Families of Choice
Summary: Richie gets an unexpected visitor as he tries to process Tessa's death, the nature of his relationship with Duncan, and his own immortality.
Another pretty heavily introspective story, but we got some interaction going on here. I've technically written Connor before, but only once and the story's still a WIP, so this was my first time getting official about writing him. I was definitely a little nervous about how that would go, he's definitely got some complexities that I was a bit concerned about getting right, but he actually flowed pretty easily once I got to where he turns up. I ended up being really pleased with the interactions here.
It definitely helped that some of the themes requested were very much up my alley. Exploring grief and loss is something that I come back to over and over again, and really enjoy doing, so I was very pleased with the request for a story along those lines. I was also tickled by my recipient. Raine_Wynd wrote for me last year, so getting her to write for made me very happy.
This exchange was once again a really great time. Only my second year doing it, but it's been wonderful.
