This year I participated in Highlander Holiday Shortcuts, for the second year running, and in Yuletide, for my first year. I've been dipping my toes into the waters of several fic events, over the last year, and I was pretty excited to participate in these.

That being said, when I sign up for exchanges I frequently sort of forget that I'm going to be receiving a gift, as well as writing one. I mostly just really enjoy the writing, and then I remember I get a gift too, and it's such an exciting treat.

And holy shit, my gifts for these two exchanges have blown me away.

My gift for yuletide:
The Stars Remember by Anonymous
Fandom: Under This Luminous Sky (Short Film)
Rating: Gen
Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Characters: Skylar, Aries
Additional Tags: Worldbuilding, Post-Canon, In-Universe Documents, Ambiguous Relationships, Unreliable Sources
Summary: Being some Fragments and Memorials from the reign of King Aries the Seventh, pertaining to the time the stars remembered.

Under This Luminous Sky is a short animated film that I saw when it was first posted to youtube a couple of years ago, and then saw in this year's list of five-minute fandoms for yuletide. Go watch it, seriously, it's five minutes long, and it's really lovely.

I really loved the choices this author made based on canon, as well. Given how short the film is, there's a whole lot of room for speculation on a ton of worldbuilding, and this fic explores so much of that really beautifully. The final lines especially just really struck me. It's a wonderful piece of writing, and I just want to throw it at everyone to read.

My gift for shortcuts:
Moondance or A Series of Extraordinary Events by Anonymous
Fandom: Highlander: The Series
Rating: Gen
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Richie Ryan, Methos, Angie Burke, Tessa Noel, Joe Dawson, Duncan MacLeod, May-Ling Shen, Amanda Darieux, Connor MacLeod, Ceirdwyn
Additional Tags: Questionable Use of Science, Background Richie/Angie, Richie Ryan Saves The Day, unexplained phenomenon, Light Angst, nobody dies everybody lives
Summary: Richie lassos the moon.

I am. Staggered. By this piece.

It is so beautifully written, and has such remarkable grace. Every single chapter is such a treat, and the recurring themes and the way they build into the narrative are just spectacular. It's just such a rich story, and so deeply touching. There's so much growth, and so many really, really wonderful interactions. I'm always a sucker for good visual imagery, too, especially when it ties into recurring themes, and this story has piles of it. I'm honestly still just a little stunned at this gift, it's so good, and so hopeful, and I just love the direction the author took with it.

Gradually working my way through reading the other stories in these exchange collections (or at least the ones for fandoms I'm into, for yuletide, because wow there's so many), and there's some really excellent stuff. I'm really enjoying the chance to read so many great stories.
