A Matter of Profit is a stand-alone YA sci-fi novel by Hilari Bell. A brief summary, lifted directly from the wiki:
And there's a bit of a story behind my copy of this book.
I picked it up on a whim. I was in a town called Leura in NSW, Australia. That's not quite as far from my home as it's possible to be, but it's pretty close. I'd run out of reading material for the trip, and found A Matter of Profit in a lovely little bookstore and picked it up to tide me over until I got home. It almost instantly became a favorite for me.
I'm pretty bad about actually looking at title pages and dedication pages and so on, especially when it's a new book that I'm excited about, so it took me a while to actually look at that section of the book for long enough to realize it's a signed copy. I'm not one to go crazy over signed copies of things, but it was still a pretty cool discovery.
It took me somewhat longer to actually read the about-the-author section, where I discovered that Hilari Bell lived and worked at the time in my own home city. Not only that, she worked at a library I had been to several times. There was at least some small chance that I had actually encountered her a time or two before and not thought anything of it.
I'm still amazed at the odds of a signed copy of this book, discovered in a bookstore in a town halfway across the world, being picked up by someone from the author's own home city on a whim one day.
This book has traveled all around the country and to a few other countries with me as well, by now. I still love it, and it still comes with me on pretty much any long-term trip I take.
I think I may be due for a reread of this book soon. It's been a while, and as I said, it's been on my mind a lot lately. I'd love to maybe write a piece or two of fic for it at some point, it's got such a great setting to explore. Currently there's only one piece of fic for this book on ao3, and I'd love to add to that.
Ahvren's people, the Vivitare, have conquered the T'Chin confederacy. After spending two years fighting a brutal war on another world, Ahvren welcomes peace. However, he is suspicious of his people's easy victory, wondering why the T'Chin surrendered. It is rumored that the Vivitare emperor is in danger of being assassinated and Ahvren offers to uncover the plot, in return for the freedom to choose his own path. To do it, he must understand what motivates the T'Chin. This book has been on my mind a lot recently. It's been a favorite of mine for somewhere close to 20 years. It's got some pretty interesting worldbuilding, a lot of fascinating cultural conflicts, characters I love, and a couple of twists near the end that still delight me. It's been a little while since I read it, but for a while this was a book I read at least once a year.
